The best hair loss shampoos have one job and one job only, to help prevent hair loss by promoting thicker, fuller hair to grow, despite one man finding not washing his hair at all helped him fight hair loss.

Hair loss can happen for several reasons; hormones, stress, genetics… And it can happen in multiple ways too. You may find that your hair is thinning all over your scalp, or you may notice that your hairline is simply receding backwards.

Whatever type of hair loss you’re experiencing though, there are ways to prevent and fix it, and one of the best hair loss shampoos is certainly going to be a great place to start – unless, you’re combating male-pattern baldness; which is unfortunately inevitable, although the rate at which you’re losing your hair can be slowed down.

Different types of hair loss and how to best fix it

Male-pattern baldness

Male-pattern baldness, or ‘androgenic alopecia’, is a genetic condition that causes hair follicles to shrink which eventually leads to no new hair growth. This type of hair loss usually starts later in life, and men will most commonly begin first losing hair around their crown or temples and then their hairline will continually recede backward in an ‘M’ shape until most or all of their hair is gone.

There is, unfortunately, no cure for male-pattern baldness, but – as mentioned earlier – you can slow down the rate at which you’re losing your hair. You want to look for shampoos or hair treatments with an ingredient called ‘Minoxidil’. Minoxidil has been proven to slow hair loss as well as stimulate hair follicles leading to new hair growth. Considered a topical medication, be warned that if you start but then stop using Minoxidil, your hair loss will start again.

Thinning hair

On average, we lose 50-100 hairs per day, but if you’re losing more than that and are starting to see bald patches, your hair is definitely thinning. This can be caused by multiple things, such as clogged pores on your scalp, stress, vitamin deficiencies, or using harsh chemical products on your hair.

To treat thinning hair, you want a shampoo that will both gently cleanse and stimulate your scalp (as a healthy scalp generates more hair over time) and is filled with Vitamins, Amino Acids, and/or Omega 3s (to nourish and prevent further damage to your existing hair).
